The main difference between barndominium plans and pole barn houses lies in the construction materials used for framing. In a barndominium house plan, the framing is usually a stick build, although some designs incorporate steel columns mounted into a concrete foundation. This design eliminates the need for load-bearing walls throughout the home, allowing for an exceptionally open floor plan.

On the other hand, pole barn homes utilize standard wood-post frames anchored into the ground. While the wood framing is similar to that of traditional houses, the spacing of the posts is closer together—typically between 8 to 12 feet apart—making for a sturdier frame. However, it is still necessary to include load-bearing walls in a pole barn house.
